A router is a networking device that typically forwards data packets from one router to the other through the network. This means that you can transfer data packets between the computer networks. It can be done via either wired or wireless connection.
Actually, the router reads the address information from the data packet that comes in one of the lines to determine the destination of the source packet. Using this address information, they can fix the path of the packets and directs them to the next router.
The main functionality of a router is to direct the traffic on the internet which is more familiar to home and small or large scale office networks.

The edge router is also called access router, which is a specialized router residing at the edge or boundary of a network. They use external BGP protocol for data transmission to connect to external networks, wide area networks (WAN) and the internet.
It is a network that forwards data packets to a computer within the network but not between the networks. This router sometimes contrasted with an edge network. This means it routes packets between a self-contained network and other outside networks along a network backbone.
